What’s the dispute surfacing in Nepali Congress?

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba and senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel held a discussion to forge consensus on the matters concerning the upcoming 14th general convention.

President Deuba reached Poudel residence at Boharatar this morning to discuss the agenda of the party’s central committee meeting and work schedule of the 14th general convention.

The discussion between two leaders took place around an hour in the presence of NC vice-president Bimalendra Nidhi, informed Chiranjibi Adhikari, personal secretary of Poudel.

On the occasion, the senior leader had reiterated his stance to make the public work schedule of the 14th general convention. However, President Deuba said the central election committee would make public the general convention schedule after completing internal adjustment of the party, informed NC spokesperson Biswo Prakash Sharma.

Sharma further said the two leaders would potentially find consensus through dialogue between the committees representing both sides.

The establishment side has designated Nidhi for dialogue while leader Poudel side has assigned the responsibility to a team headed by Prakash Man Singh with Dilendra Prasad Badu and Hridayaram Thani as members.

The establishment side is planning to continue the central committee meeting scheduled for 1.00 pm Sunday and discuss the formation of central departments despite failure to forge consensus.

It may be noted that senior leader Poudel side leaders had boycotted the December 12 central committee meeting demanding presentation of work schedule.

If the timeframe stipulated in the party statute is followed, the 14th general convention should be held 13 March 2020. The statute has granted authority to the party leadership to prolong the general convention by a year in case of special circumstances.
