KATHMANDU: Minister for Labor, Employment and Social Security, Gokarna Bista has urged the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to make its role more effective in getting the provision of sending laborers on foreign employment at zero investment implemented in the labor supplying countries.

Minster Bista put his views during a meeting with the IOM’s Asia and Pacific Region regional director Dr Maria Nenette Motus.

The IOM official had paid a courtesy call on the Minister Bista at his office in Singha Durbar.

Minister Bista said workers have been undergoing difficulties due to the unhealthy competition in the labor supply.

He also urged IOM to work with determination to have the provision of the employers themselves bearing all the expenses to sending the laborers implemented in letter and spirit.

Stating that there was a need for minimum standard for systematizing the labor recruiting process, Minister Bista suggested that IOM could play a significant role in formulating such standards.

He also suggested moving forward by making a long-term strategy on labor migration.

IOM regional director Motus appreciated the Government of Nepal’s role in making the labor migration safe, systematic and dignified, according to the Ministry of Labour.
