NEW DELHI: India has unveiled its spacecraft Chandrayaan-2, which is expected to land on the Moon by September, media reports have said.
If the missions becomes successful, India will be the fourth country to accomplish the mission of a soft landing on the Moon, after the US, the former Soviet Union and China.
Chandrayaan-2 is India’s second lunar mission.
India launched Chandrayaan-1 in 2008, but did not land on the surface of the Moon. The latest mission is said to focus on the moon’s surface, gather data on water, minerals as well as rock formations, reports said.
The Chandrayaan-2 has a lander, an orbiter and a rover, which is expected to operate for around two weeks on the moon. According to reports, the rover is likely to analyze the content of the moon’s surface, send data and images back to earth. (Agencies)
