Ayodhya Verdict: Ayodhya disputed land to be given for temple

NEW DELHI:  The Supreme Court in a landmark verdict announced Saturday that the disputed land in Ayodhya will be given to a government-run trust for constructing a temple of Lord Ram and a five-acre of land will be provided for a mosque.

Hearing the case, a five-judge of the constitution bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi issued a verdict amid tight security ending a protracted dispute surrounding Ayodhya for 134 years.

Hindus had been claiming that the disputed site where Babri Mosque is located now is the birthplace of Lord Ram while Muslims had been reiterating that they have been worshipping at the mosque for a long time.

The verdict comes after a century-old legal wrangle over a piece of land in Ayodhya where the 16th-century Babri mosque stood before it was razed by Hindu activists who believe it is the birthplace of Lord Ram.
