KATHMANDU: High Court, Patan has sent Chinese hackers involved in hacking ATMs of seven banks and financial institutions in Nepal to jail to serve judicial custody.

A joint bench of Justices Ram Prasad Oli and Kiran Poduel sent five Chinese nationals and one French national to Sundhara Jail. They have to stay at the jail until the court delivers a final verdict on the case.

The court, however, released Nepalis involved in the hacking scandal on a bail.

Spokesperson at the court, Mohan Subedi, said that the court demanded Rs three million bail bond from Devnath Lamichhane and Rs 2.6 million from Roshan Pradhan and Rewati Duwadi.

The report prepared by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) said that the hackers stole 18.9 million of different commercial banks of Nepal by hacking 68 ATM booths.

They had used fake ATM cards of seven banks to siphon the money through a cyber-attack between Nepal Electronic Payment System (NEPS) and Visa.
