PERMATANG PAUH: Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad must clarify why he appointed Ms Latheefa Beebi Koya as the new Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner, demanded Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) president Anwar Ibrahim on Thursday (Jun 6). Latheefa was named to the post effective Jun 1, replacing Mohd Shukri Abdull who quit before his tenure to continue till 2020.

Mahathir did not consult the Cabinet prior to the controversial appointment. The appointment is not in line with the MACC Act and also violates the Pakatan Harapan election manifesto. Anwar, who is the Member of Parliament for Port Dickson have agreed to give the prime minister time and space to clarify the appointment at the proper platforms.

“We will ensure MACC remains independent and those in charge to protect the institution must be seen as very professional and not to be engaged in any kind of political and faction affiliation. It is a serious concern,” said Anwar Ibrahim. (Agencies)
