Reuters jounalists Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo released

YANGON: Wa Lone, 33 and Kyaw Soe Oo, 29, journalists belonging to Reuters jailed in Myanmar for their reporting on the Rohingya crisis, have been freed.

They were released after the president granted amnesty for them. Lone and Oo, who were in jail in Myanmar after being convicted of breaking the Official Secrets Act, walked free from a prison on the outskirts of Yangon on Tuesday after spending more than 500 days behind bars.

They were released after a presidential amnesty. They had been convicted under the Official Secrets Act and sentenced to seven years in jail last September.

“I’m really happy and excited to see my family and my colleagues. I can’t wait to go to my newsroom,” Wa Lone said. The pair were released along with thousands of other prisoners as part of mass amnesties that take place annually around Myanmar’s new year.
