KATHMANDU: Google has published today’s doodle to mark 50 years of Pride and acceptance of the LGBTQ community. The doodle takes us through the Pride history, starting from the 1969, when the community collectively started fighting for its identity, rights and dignity.

Doodle takes viewers on a five-decade-long journey of Pride history, encompassing the growth and evolution of the international Pride parade.

“The Pride Parade is a symbol of celebration and liberation for the entire LGBTQ+ community. From its early days of activism on Christopher Street in New York City to the worldwide celebrations of today, it has empowered and given voice to a bright and vibrant community,” says Nate Swinehart, the brain behind the slideshow.

To mark June as Gay and Lesbian Pride month, Google has traditionally added a rainbow to the right side of the search bar when users search for “gay,” “lesbian,” “transgender,” or related terms. This year’s return on those search terms is a graphic depicting Pride celebrations around the world.

Google’s Doodlers wanted the Doodle to underscore how the Pride parade has grown in size and momentum over the past half century, empowering a bright and vibrant community along the way.

Fifty years back, in June, New York police launched an early morning raid on a small Greenwich Village bar frequented by members of the gay community, thus sparking the Stonewall riots and ushering in the battle for LGBT rights in the US.
