Two Nepalis arrested in Hong Kong in latest crackdown on protesters

KATHMANDU: In the latest crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong, police have arrested two Nepali nationals.

The arrested are Jenny Rai and Rosemary Limbu. They were arrested from Yau Ma Tei, an area in the Yau Tsim Mong District in the south of the Kowloon Peninsula in Hong Kong.

The girls, who were in Hong Kong for study, have been kept at Hung Hom and Cheung Sha Wan police stations and have been tied and not allowed to meet anyone. Nepali Consulate in Hong Kong has also not been informed about their condition.

Hong Kong Police have been arresting and inflicting torture on foreign students in Hong Kong only on an assumption of their involvement in the protest. Hong Kong has been cracking down on protesters of late on direction from Beijing.

The months-long pro-democracy protests that have gripped Hong Kong began in June in reaction to a now withdrawn extradition bill but have since morphed with calls of greater police accountability and an investigation into allegations of excessive use of force.

More protests have erupted in the city following the shooting of an 18-year-old student.
