KATHMANDU: Amnesty International Nepal (Amnesty Nepal) has asked the government to ensure press freedom in the country.
Director of Amnesty Nepal, Nirajan Thapaliya, on Friday urged the government ot guarantee press freedom both in law and practice that allows journalists an independent working environment.
“The government should uphold press freedom,” he said while asking it to rectify legal provisions, which are contrary to the constitutional guarantees of the freedom of expression.
Thapaliya said Amnesty International reiterates its support to press freedom. Stating that journalism is not a crime, he added that journalists should not become subjects of violence while exercising their profession.
He said it the state’s fundamental responsibility to ensure journalists’ security and the freedom of press.
