SAG 2019: Nepal wins 6 gold medals

KATHMANDU: Nepal has collected six gold medals in the ongoing 13th South Asain Games (SAG) held in Kathmandu.

The number of gold medals won by Nepal has reached six after Karate player Mande Kaji Shrestha bagged two gold medals – one in the Karate Single Kata event and the other in Group-wise Kata event. Prabin Manandhar and Mahasush Tamang were other members in the Mande Kaji’s team.

Shrestha won the first gold medal in the individual kata under karate. He defeated Pakistani player Niamatullah and secured 25.72 points. The Pakistani player who bagged silver medal scored 24.92 points.

In the semifinal match before this, Mandekaji edged the Bangladeshi player and secured his place in the final.

With this Mandekaji has become successful in winning a gold medal for the country in karate’s kata after two decades. Gangaram Maharjan had won a gold medal in kata in the 8th SAG held in Nepal before this.
Chanchala wins silver in women karate kata event

Sina Maden Limbu won a gold medal in the Taekwondo event. She won the medal under the age category of women’s  17-23 years.

Sina scored 8. 150 points while India’s Rupa Bayor grabbed a silver medal scoring 8.130 points. Sri Lanka is compelled to satisfy with a bronze medal.

Similarly, a team of Nirmala Tamang, Saru Karki, and Ranjita Malla bagged a gold medal. Nepal scored 24.88 points while Pakistan bagged silver medal scoring 23.3 points.

Likewise, Kamal Shrestha won a gold medal in the Taekwondo event. Shrestha defeated India’s Rahul Jain in a 23-29 age category of Pumse. He collected 8.270 points while Rahul obtained 8.200 points and bagged the silver medal.

Sri Lanka’s player Nishashankase Asinge bagged the bronze with 8.060 points.

Prior to this, Nepal’s Krishna Bahadur Tamang clinched the silver in the taekwondo competition in the 17-23 age group.

Similarly, Sony Gurung won the gold medal in the Triathlon tournament held at Lakeside, Pokhara.

Meanwhile, Karate player Chanchala Danuwar won the silver medal in the Karate event.

So far, Nepal has bagged eight medals in the multi-sports event.
