Krishnanagar limps back to normalcy; curfew to be lifted today

KATHMANDU: Normalcy has gradually returned to the Hindu-Muslim violence-rocked Krishnanagar of Kapilvastu on Friday after a day of unrest and curfew.

An Indian national, Suraj Kumar Pandey, was killed in police firing on Thursday following a clash that erupted between two religious communities in the area.

The local administration had clamped a curfew at Krishnanagar after tension flared between two religious communities – Hindu and Muslim.

The situation gradually returned to normalcy following an 11-point agreement between the two sides on Thursday late night, according to Manoj Kumar Saini, an administration officer at the District Administration Office, Kapilvastu.

The situation turned tense after Hindu people were consigning the idol after worshipping Laxmi Puja.

The situation took a nasty turn after some youths from Muslim Community protested when Hindu people were about to consign the idol of goddess Laxmi at Jhandinagar of Krishnanagar on Thursday morning, said District Police Office, Kapilvastu.

However, the deployment of security-forces continues in the area hit by the violence.
