Reconstruction, renovation status of the heritages

KATHMANDU: The devastating earthquake of 2015 had damaged more than 920 heritages in 31 districts of the country.

Regardless of the government’s proclamation of successful reconstruction activities, heritage reconstruction seems still not in priority in the past 58 months after the earthquake.

The Department of Archaeology claims that despite their attempts, as many as 520 heritages damaged by the 2015 earthquake are still to be renovated. The Department expects to complete the renovation and reconstruction of 150 more heritages in the running fiscal year.

Inside Kathmandu Valley

The earthquake had damaged 540 heritages of Kathmandu Valley: 319 in Kathmandu, 123 in Lalitpur and 98 in Bhaktapur.

Out of them, the renovation and/or reconstruction of 161 heritage sites is complete whereas 256 are undergoing the process for their new life.

According to the Department, 99 in Kathmandu, 30 in Lalitpur, and 40 of Bhaktapur have already got their post-earthquake life.

Eight heritages of the Changu Narayan Temple premise were badly affected by the 2015 earthquake. Five of them have come to normalcy, 2 are under construction when one is still getting the work initiated.

The reconstruction of 168 in Kathmandu, 50 in Lalitpur and 38 in Bhaktapur is going on whereas 60 in Kathmandu, 43 in Lalitpur and 20 in Bhaktapur are waiting to be renovated. Thus 123 heritages are waiting for their turn for renovation.

Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square: Out of 39 badly affected sites of Kathmandu Durbar Square, the renovation of 19 is already over when 9 are under facelift. 11 sites still await their turn of revamping.

Patan Durbar Square: Out of 18 damaged cultural and historical glories of Patan, 10 have got their renovation completed when eight are still undergoing the revival.

Swayambhunath Area: The situation of Swayambhunath is relatively better as out of 13 damaged heritages here 11 have already been restored in their normal structure and the remaining 2 are under construction.

Pashupatinath Area: 35 of 62 damaged heritages of the Pashupati area have already been renovated. The renovation of 27 places there is undergoing.

Bhaktapur: 29 inheritances of the cultural city Bhaktapur had been damaged by the Earthquake 2015.

While 20 heritages have got their normal form now, 6 are undergoing the facelift. Three cultural sites of Bhaktapur are still to be renovated.

Changunarayan: Eight heritages of the Changu Narayan Temple premise were badly affected by the 2015 earthquake. Five of them have come to normalcy, 2 are under construction when one is still getting the work initiated.

Bouddhanath Area: The renovation of affected parts of Bouddhanath Stupa is already complete.
