Gautam to be NA member; Khatiwada to continue as FinMin

KATHMANDU: A section of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) has worked out a plan to resolve the ongoing dispute within the party.

If everything goes as planned, party Vice Chairman Bam Dev Gautam will be nominated as a member of the National Assembly while Finance Minister Dr. Yubraj Khatiwada will continue working as the minister for another six months.

Dr. Khatiwada’s term as the National Assembly member is expiring next week. Hence, the NCP secretariat had earlier decided to send Gautam to the National Assembly as its member.

Party General Secretary Bishnu Paudel has proposed giving continuity to Dr. Khatiwada as the Finance Minister for the next six months which will pave the way for him to continue with the ministerial portfolio even if Gautam was nominated for the Upper House.

The constitution has it that the prime minister can appoint anyone outside the Federal Parliament a minister, but the appointee should be made a member in the next six months.
