Deputy Speaker Tumbahangphe steps down

KATHMANDU: Deputy Speaker Dr. Shiva Maya Tumbahangphe has resigned from her post on Monday.

Tumbahamphe, who had staked claim to the post of Speaker, finally announced her resignation while chairing a meeting House of Representatives.

The Nepal Communist Party (NCP) had been asking for her resignation as Speaker and Deputy Speaker should be from different parties as per the constitutional provision.

Addressing the House at the beginning of the meeting, Tumbahamphe, “I would like to inform the House that I have reached a conclusion to clear the way.”

The House of Representatives will start the process for the election of a new Speaker today through a meeting slated for 4 pm today. Mahanta Thakur will be chairing today’s meeting as he is the senior-most member.

The post is vacant since October 1, 2019, after the then Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara stepped down.
