Impasse over Speaker selection ‘ending soon’

Dahal-Oli meet ends 'positively'

KATHMANDU: The meeting between the two chairmen of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) KP Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal ended on a positive note, leaders following the development have said.

During the meeting held at the prime minister’s official residence in Baluwatar on Thursday, the chairmen discussed the selection of a new speaker, Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) among other contemporary issues.

According to the Personal Secretariat of Chairman Dahal, discussions have moved ahead in the direction of ending the impasse over Speaker selection.

Sources said Chairman Dahal was delighted while leaving Baluwatar after the meeting.

“It can be said that an agreement on new Speaker will be forged soon as the meeting ended positively,” the source told Khabarhub, “The meeting is heading positively.”

The leaders of the ruling party have remained at odds over the selection of a new Speaker.

Chairman Oli is for picking former Speaker Subas Nembang as the candidate for the Speaker. Dahal has been insisting that leader Agni Sapkota is eligible for the post. Likewise, President Bidya Devi Bhandari has been pressing NCP leadership to pick Deputy Speaker Dr. Shiva Maya Tumbahangphe as a new Speaker.

The meeting between the two chairmen resumed today at a time when there have been reports of the sour relationship between the two. There was no communication between the two heavyweights since Sunday.

NCP had requested Deputy Speaker Dr. Tumbahangphe to step down. However, she has insisted that she is not quitting anytime soon.

Leaders close to Chairman Dahal said he is miffed with Chairman and Prime Minister KP Oli for not clearly directing the Deputy Speaker to resign.
