KATHMANDU: The main opposition party Nepali Congress (NC) urged the government not to discriminate any private companies while formulating and implementing policies. The recent decision of the cabinet regarding telecom companies has revealed that lawlessness has been prevailing in the country, NC said.

“It was Congress that introduced privatization in the country. However, we firmly believe that fair treatment to all the competing companies is a must to witness a significant growth of the national economy.”

NC claimed that the recent decision of the government on issuing the license to some companies is contradictory to the decision of the Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA), the Supreme Court’s ruling over NTA’s decision, and the directives of the Parliament’s Finance Committee. “The decision, however, proves that the government is not willing to recover outstanding taxes and fees from various companies,” NC argued, in a press release.

“Since the internet tariff in Nepal is the most expensive in South Asia, it is the call for the time that the private sector should be encouraged for their active involvement and investment. The recent decision of the government is condemnable,” the statement further read.

Congress urged the government not to make any compromise on various issues including issuing the license to private companies and collecting revenue from them.

Similarly, The NC urged the government to curb thriving corruption and irregularities at various levels. “Although Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli expressed commitment to maintain zero-tolerance against corruption at times, it is evident that most of the irregularities have taken place under his administration,” the NC spokesperson Bishwo Prakash Sharma stated in the press release.
