KATHMANDU: In the latest crackdown on illegal foreigners, police have rounded 122 foreigners, mainly Chinese nationals, from different parts of Kathmandu Valley for their alleged involvement in suspicious activities, including hacking after arriving in Nepal on a tourist visa.

Most of them had come to Nepal on tourist visas, police said.

Acting on a tip-off that few Chinese nationals have been active in hacking Nepali banks, police raided different places in Valley and arrested 122 foreigners so far.

A joint team from the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu, and Metropolitan Crime Division raided their hideouts in Manamaiju, Bansbari, and Thamel among areas.

“Raids were carried out on a tip-off that foreigners have been involved in suspicious activities after arriving in Nepal on a tourist visa,” said Chief of Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu SSP Uttamraj Subedi.

A police official contacted by Khabarhub said that among those arrested, most of them are Chinese nationals.

“We had received information that they were involved in illegal activities such as hacking banking system,” the official said, “ The raids were carried out after finding out their hideouts.”

Earlier, in September-October, Nepal Police had arrested Chinese nationals while they were stealing money from banks in the capital by hacking the ATM system.

They had used fake ATM cards of seven banks to siphon the money through a cyber-attack between Nepal Electronic Payment System (NEPS) and Visa.

A case has been filed against them and they are currently serving a jail term under the Banking Offense and Organized Crime Act, 2064.
