11th Human Rights National Magna Meet to kick off on Sunday

KATHMANDU: NGO Federation of Nepal (NFN) is organizing the 11th Human Rights National Magna Meet 2019 from Sunday in Kathmandu.

The eight-day long program that will conclude on December 15 (Sunday) will be focused on human rights issues.

NFN has organized the program to shed light on the human rights status of the country. Similarly, the program is focused on discussion on human rights issues and  will submit a full-fledged report to the government, Jit Ram Lama, president of NFN said.

Some 200 organizations that are working on the issue of human rights will be participating in the Magna Meet.

The program is hosted on the occasion of ‘The International Human Rights Day’, which is observed on December 10 to commemorate the issuance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.

This year, the day will be marked to highlight the role of young people and their participation in social movements to stand up for human rights and bring changes.

There are more adolescents and young adults alive today than at any other time in human history, and they are generally better educated, healthier and have greater access to technology and information that can be leveraged to stand up for human rights.

Young people have always been major drivers of political, economic and social change. In the last few years, they have been at the forefront of grassroots mobilizations for change. Youth participation is essential to achieve sustainable development for all. Empowering youth to know better  and claim their rights, will generate global benefits.

Understanding the importance of youth participation in Human Rights and sustainable development, Nepal is marking the day with a slogan, “Based on Sustainable Development, Human Rights for All.”

Although Nepal has guaranteed human rights in its constitution, the implementation of human rights is not satisfactory yet. So, this program will be the platform for lobbying, advocating, and discussion for all-facet of human rights, Ram Prasad Subedi, General Secretary at NFN said.

Similarly, the National Human Rights Award, Padma Ratna Tuladhar National Human Rights Award, and Shanta Laxmi Shrestha Women Nation Human Rights Award will also be handed over in the program.

Parbat Gurung, Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens, is scheduled to inaugurate the program at the Rastriya Nachghar on Sunday.

The program is co-organized by National Youth Federation Nepal and Grass Roots Development Foundation.
