KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Balendra Shah has pledged to resolve the problems facing Nepal’s ready-made garment industry and prioritize measures to boost production and exports.
During a meeting with office-bearers of the Garment Association Nepal at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers on Tuesday, Shah discussed the current state of the industry and its key challenges.
According to Garment Association Nepal President Pashupati Dev Pandey, the meeting focused on reviving Nepal’s ready-made garment industry to its pre-2005 level in an effort to strengthen the national economy.
Pandey said the prime minister directed the concerned authorities to immediately convene meetings and resolve issues that have remained pending in various ministries.
He added that Shah also expressed the government’s intention to revive sick garment industries that have remained closed for the past two decades in order to promote import substitution and boost exports.
The prime minister also pledged to establish a Textile Council to strengthen the textile and garment sector and develop it as a key pillar of the national economy.
According to Pandey, Shah further instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to facilitate the removal of laboratory and testing-related barriers affecting Nepal’s garment exports to the United States.
