Heavy rain likely today; public urged to remain alert

KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has urged the public to remain alert as heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in various parts of the country today.

According to the meteorologist Sanjeev Adhikari, monsoon winds are currently influencing the country’s weather. With the monsoon low-pressure line positioned slightly above its average location in western Nepal, around the Terai in the central region, and near its average position in the east, significant rainfall is expected over the next three days.

The Department said heavy rainfall is likely at a few places in the hilly and Terai regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces today, with very heavy rainfall possible at one or two locations. Heavy rainfall is also forecast at isolated places in Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces.

The Department warned that the expected rainfall could increase the risk of flash floods, river flooding, landslides and soil erosion. Residents of vulnerable areas have been advised to take necessary precautions.

The weather conditions may also affect daily life, agriculture, public health, tourism, mountaineering, and road and air transport. The department has urged the public to regularly follow its latest weather updates.

This afternoon, the weather is expected to remain generally to completely cloudy across the country. Moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely in many hilly and Terai areas, while some places in the Himalayan region may receive snowfall along with rainfall.

Cloudy conditions are expected to persist across most parts of the country tonight, with moderate rain and thunderstorms likely in many hilly and Terai areas.

The Department has advised people to remain on high alert, as very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is possible at one or two locations in the hilly and Terai regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces.
