KATHMANDU: Active monsoon conditions are set to bring moderate to heavy rainfall to many parts of the country today, prompting the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology to urge the public to remain alert for possible floods and landslides.
According to the Department, monsoon winds are currently affecting the entire country, while the monsoon trough (low-pressure line) lies slightly north of its average position, close to Nepal’s Terai region.
At present, light to moderate rainfall is occurring at many places in Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces and at one or two places in Lumbini and Karnali provinces.
This afternoon, Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces are expected to remain mostly cloudy, while Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces will be generally cloudy.
There is a possibility of moderate to heavy rain or snowfall accompanied by thunder and lightning at some places in the mountainous areas of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces and at a few places in the mountainous regions of Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces.
Moderate to heavy rainfall with thunder and lightning is also likely at many places in the hilly and Terai areas of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, at some places in the hilly and Terai regions of Madhesh, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces, and at some places in Karnali Province.
Heavy rainfall is likely at a few places in the hilly areas of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, as well as at one or two places in the Terai of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces and the hilly areas of Lumbini Province.
Tonight, the weather is expected to remain generally cloudy across the country. Moderate to heavy rain or snowfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely at a few places in the mountainous areas of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces and at one or two places in the mountainous regions of Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces.
Similarly, moderate to heavy rainfall with thunder and lightning is forecast at some places in the hilly and Terai areas of Madhesh, Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, and at some places in Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces. Heavy rainfall is also likely at one or two places in the Terai of Koshi Province and the hilly areas of Gandaki Province.
The Department has urged the public to exercise caution due to the risk of flash floods, floods, landslides and soil erosion in vulnerable areas. It also warned that adverse weather could disrupt daily life, agriculture, health services, tourism, mountaineering, and both road and air transportation. Citizens have been advised to stay updated with the department’s latest weather bulletins.
