Doctors advise against immediate transfer of burn patient Ganesh Nepali to India

KATHMANDU: The government has decided not to immediately transfer Ganesh Nepali, 25, of Soru Rural Municipality-1 in Mugu to India for further treatment after doctors advised that the move could pose additional risks to his health.

According to Deepa Dahal, press and research expert to Prime Minister Balendra Shah, all preparations had been completed to airlift Nepali to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi based on an initial medical recommendation.

The government had arranged an air ambulance and decided to bear the full cost of his treatment. Home Minister Sudan Gurung has also been actively involved in coordinating the rescue and treatment process.

However, doctors treating Nepali at Bir Hospital concluded that transferring him at this stage would be risky. He is currently on ventilator support in the hospital’s Burn Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The medical team has recommended transferring Nepali to India for advanced treatment only after his condition stabilizes.

Members of the Home Minister’s Secretariat and the Prime Minister’s Secretariat have been stationed at Bir Hospital since Thursday night to coordinate treatment arrangements.

Nepali was admitted to Bir Hospital’s emergency department at around 3:00 pm on Thursday after sustaining burns to about 55 percent of his body, according to the hospital.

His treatment is being led by Dr. Piyush Dahal, coordinator of the hospital’s Plastic Surgery Department. The medical team also includes Burn Unit Chief Dr. Apar Lamichhane, critical care specialist Dr. Nirman Gyawali, anesthesiologist Dr. Jayaprakash Thakur, Prof. Dr. Raviram Shrestha, and a 21-member multidisciplinary team, including nursing staff, the hospital said.
