KATHMANDU: A solar power system has been installed at Nepal Telecom’s telephone tower in Timure, Rasuwa, which had been operating on a diesel generator.
Nepal Telecom brought the 12-kilowatt solar system into operation to ensure uninterrupted telephone services in Timure after electricity supply from the Nepal Electricity Authority remained disrupted for an extended period.
Following the Bhotekoshi flood in Rasuwa on August 26, electricity supply was cut off, forcing the telephone tower in Timure to operate using a diesel generator.
However, diesel needed to run the tower also had to be transported by helicopter. With the solar system now operational, the need for regular diesel transportation has been eliminated.
Nepal Telecom said it transported the necessary equipment and materials to Timure-Khaidi by helicopter and installed the 12-kilowatt solar system. The installation will allow Nepal Telecom’s 2G and 4G services in the Timure area to operate smoothly even when electricity is unavailable.
The Bhotekoshi flood affected telecommunications infrastructure and services in Rasuwa and several other districts. With power disrupted in the Timure area, telecommunications services had been dependent on generators.
The solar system now provides an alternative source of energy needed to operate telephone and mobile internet services.
Nepal Telecom said the system will help ensure continued telecommunications services for local residents, travellers and service users in the border area.
