Kathmandu Valley Police launches campaign against drug abuse and human trafficking

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Valley Police Office (KVPO) Chief and Additional Inspector General (AIG) of Police Sushil Singh Rathore has called for coordinated efforts to combat narcotic drug abuse and human trafficking.

Speaking at the launch of a week-long awareness campaign at the New Bus Park (Gongabu Bus Park) in Kathmandu on Monday, AIG Rathore said close cooperation between the police and the public is essential to build a safe and crime-free society.

Highlighting the campaign’s objectives, he said the initiative aims to curb the growing problem of drug addiction among young people and help uncover hidden cases of human trafficking.

Rathore urged all stakeholders to work together to prevent both crimes.

The campaign has been jointly organized by the New Bus Park Police Unit and the Gongabu Community Service Centre to raise public awareness and protect young people from drug abuse and trafficking-related offences.

As part of the week-long programme, awareness activities will be conducted at hotels, restaurants, dohori venues, schools, and other public places in the New Bus Park area.

Kathmandu District Police Chief, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dilip Ghimire, also stressed the need for collective action to address drug abuse and human trafficking in and around the busy Gongabu Bus Park.

Nepal National Federation of Transport Entrepreneurs Chairperson Punya Prasad Sitaula urged transport operators to remain vigilant, noting that public vehicles are sometimes used to smuggle narcotic substances.

Similarly, Tokha Municipality Ward No. 9 Chairperson Ram Bhakta Ghimire reaffirmed the local government’s commitment to working with police to keep the Gongabu area free from crime.

Students from Maharshi School and College and BST College in Gongabu also participated in the campaign launch.
