KATHMANDU: The impact of a heatwave is expected to persist across parts of Nepal’s western Tarai on Thursday, with temperatures forecast to reach as high as 41 degrees Celsius in some areas.
According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), heatwave conditions are likely to continue in several locations of the Tarai districts in Sudurpashchim and Lumbini provinces.
DHM spokesperson Bibhuti Pokharel urged residents to take special precautions, warning that extreme heat in the Tarai regions of Lumbini and Gandaki provinces could have adverse effects on public health.
The department’s weather forecast indicates that the maximum temperature in Dhangadhi is expected to range between 38°C and 40°C, while Nepalgunj could record temperatures between 39°C and 41°C.
Similarly, temperatures in Bhairahawa, Birgunj, Ghorahi, and Simara are likely to remain between 35°C and 38°C.
In contrast, hilly and mountainous areas of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces are expected to witness light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning.
The department has also forecast rainfall in Kathmandu Valley, Pokhara, Dhankuta, Biratnagar, Dharan, and Taplejung. The maximum temperature in Kathmandu Valley is expected to remain between 28°C and 30°C.
Authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day, drink plenty of water, wear light cotton clothing, and take extra care of children, senior citizens, and people with chronic illnesses.
Climate experts say the duration and intensity of heatwaves in Nepal’s Tarai region have increased in recent years due to climate change, with growing impacts on public health, agriculture, and daily life.
