Construction of new HoR meeting hall enters final phase

KATHMANDU: Construction of the new House of Representatives meeting hall inside the under-construction Parliament Building at Singha Durbar has reached its final stage, although some critical works remain unfinished.

According to the construction team, most of the structural work has been completed. However, the installation of the microphone and sound systems is still pending. Authorities have yet to set a definitive completion date for the project.

The construction has faced repeated delays despite multiple deadline extensions, prompting House Speaker DP Aryal to inspect the site on June 15 (yesterday).

During the inspection, accompanied by officials from the Federal Parliament Secretariat, Aryal directed the construction team to immediately provide a clear timeline for completing the project.

He also warned that contractors could face penalties of up to Rs 10 million per day if the work is not completed on schedule.

Addressing officials during the inspection, Aryal instructed the Minister for Urban Development and the ministry secretary to expedite the remaining work.

“Even if it requires working day and night, the commitment made must be fulfilled. Excuses are no longer acceptable. This is not only an insult to us but to the nation itself. I now need a clear conclusion on when the work will be completed,” he said.

As the new parliamentary chamber is not yet ready, meetings of the House of Representatives are currently being held in a temporary hall.

Parliament authorities plan to shift regular House proceedings to the new chamber once construction and technical installations are fully completed.
