Westerly trough to trigger rain and thunderstorm



KATHMANDU: The westerly trough currently active in the upper atmosphere is partially influencing local and easterly winds across the country.

According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the weather is generally cloudy in the mountainous and hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces.

Madhes Province is experiencing partly cloudy conditions, while the Terai region of Sudurpaschim remains mostly clear. Light to moderate rainfall is occurring in some areas of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces.

The Department stated that this afternoon, the weather will remain generally cloudy in the mountainous regions, including Koshi Province, while the remaining hilly areas and the Terai regions of Madhes, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces will experience partly cloudy conditions. The rest of the Terai is expected to remain mainly clear.

There is a possibility of moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning at a few places in Koshi Province and in parts of the country’s hilly and mountainous regions. Light snowfall is also likely in some high Himalayan areas.

Similarly, moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning may occur in the Terai regions of Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, as well as at one or two locations in Madhes Province.

Tonight, the weather is expected to remain partly cloudy in Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces, along with the country’s hilly and mountainous regions. The remaining areas are likely to experience mainly clear weather.

The Department has forecast moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning at a few places in Koshi Province and snowfall in some Himalayan regions. Light rain and snowfall may occur at one or two places in Bagmati and Gandaki provinces.

There is also a possibility of moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning at isolated locations in Madhes Province. It has urged the public to take necessary precautions against possible impacts of rain, thunderstorms, and lightning.
