KATHMANDU: Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal has objected to the conduct of opposition lawmakers, saying their actions amounted to disrespecting the House of Representatives.
Addressing Tuesday’s meeting of the House, Speaker Aryal expressed dissatisfaction after Nepali Congress Whip Niskal Rai initiated a five-minute silence in honor of martyrs without approval from the chair.
Aryal said it was inappropriate for lawmakers to determine proceedings on their own while the Speaker was conducting the session, describing the move as an insult to the House.
“While the Speaker is presiding over the meeting, members setting their own time and conducting proceedings at their own discretion is a matter of concern and amounts to disrespect toward the House,” he said.
The Speaker also objected to remarks made by opposition lawmakers during the session, stating that their conduct had drawn his serious attention.
Earlier, Nepali Congress Whip Rai had urged lawmakers to observe a moment of silence in honor of those who contributed to Nepal’s unification and national unity.
Following his call, only opposition lawmakers stood up to observe the silence, while the session remained marked by ongoing tensions between the ruling and opposition parties.
