Oli: PM Balen should not behave ‘childishly’ in public statements

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has issued a strong warning to Prime Minister Balen Shah, asking him not to make irresponsible remarks regarding national issues.

Speaking at the inauguration of the UML’s national workshop in Kathmandu on Wednesday, Oli criticized the Prime Minister’s recent statement in Parliament, where he reportedly claimed that Nepal had also encroached upon Indian territory.

Oli termed the remarks anti-national and misleading, saying such statements were unacceptable from a head of government.

“Nepal has not encroached upon even an inch of land belonging to anyone. What interest was served by such statements?” Oli said. “I want to issue a warning: a person in the position of Prime Minister should not speak irresponsibly or behave childishly.”

He further accused the Prime Minister of speaking outside parliamentary procedures and making what he described as “anti-national claims” without following proper rules.

Oli also objected to the idea of involving third parties in Nepal–India border disputes, stressing that such matters should be resolved bilaterally. He criticized the reported mention of involving the British government in the issue.

Taking a further swipe, Oli also targeted those supporting the Prime Minister’s remarks, using a metaphor to describe them as politically opportunistic, saying such behavior reflected blind support rather than national interest.

The remarks add to the escalating political exchange between the ruling leadership and the main opposition UML over sensitive border-related statements.
