Tarun Dal demands PM Balen Shah’s resignation over border remarks

KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress-affiliated youth wing Nepal Tarun Dal staged a protest in Kathmandu on Monday demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Balen Shah over his controversial remarks on Nepal-India border issues.

The demonstration was held at Maitighar Mandala, where protesters accused the Prime Minister of making a “traitorous” statement by claiming that Nepal has also encroached on Indian territory.

Tarun Dal said the Prime Minister’s remarks go against Nepal’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, national unity, independence and self-respect.

Protesters carried placards with slogans such as “Is the executive head or a burden to the nation?”, “Do not forget the open border map,” “Nepal will not tolerate insult to its brave ancestors,” and “Our border and dignity are our life.”

Addressing the protest, Tarun Dal President Manish Koirala said the Prime Minister had made irresponsible remarks on a sensitive national issue and should immediately apologize in Parliament and resign.

He also demanded clarity from both the Prime Minister and the Rastriya Swatantra Party regarding the statement.

The protest comes a day after Prime Minister Shah, while responding to lawmakers’ questions in the House of Representatives, stated that Nepal has also encroached on Indian territory, a remark that has sparked widespread political controversy and criticism from multiple parties and organizations across the country.
