NHRC submits human rights priority recommendations to government

KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has submitted a set of priority recommendations to the government outlining key areas that require immediate attention in the field of human rights.

National Human Rights Commission Nepal Commissioner Tikaram Pokhrel said the commission recently handed over a detailed document to the government on May 8, identifying priority areas for ensuring human rights protection in Nepal.

According to the NHRC, the recommendations are aimed at supporting the government in fulfilling its constitutional obligations as well as commitments under national laws and international human rights treaties and conventions ratified by Nepal.

The document emphasizes several key areas, including the effective implementation of fundamental rights, necessary legal reforms, transitional justice processes, the National Human Rights Action Plan, and the intersection of development and human rights.

It also incorporates suggestions received through international human rights mechanisms and highlights the need to strengthen institutional capacities for human rights protection.

Furthermore, the NHRC has outlined broader governance-related responsibilities for the government, including improvements in elections, human rights safeguards, and public service delivery systems.

The commission has urged the government to prioritize these areas to ensure more effective protection and promotion of human rights across the country.
