NEW DELHI: A Swiss International Air Lines aircraft was forced to abort takeoff after its engine caught fire at Indira Gandhi International Airport early Sunday, leaving at least six passengers injured.
The flight, operated by Swiss International Air Lines, was preparing to depart for Zurich when the incident occurred at around 1:08 am on the runway.
There were 232 people on board, including 224 passengers and four infants. Following the fire, all passengers were safely evacuated from the aircraft.
The injured were taken to a nearby private hospital for treatment.
Airport authorities said a full emergency was declared immediately after the incident. According to the airline, the pilot halted the takeoff and decided to evacuate passengers as a precautionary measure.
The aircraft involved is reported to be a large passenger jet. Further investigation into the incident is underway.
