Appeal not to disseminate misleading information

KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has urged one and all not to disseminate misleading information.

The ministry has said that it’s serious attention has been drawn to the publication and dissemination of baseless, false and misleading content through various online news media and social media platforms as of late.

According to a press release issued by the ministry today, such fabricated information is creating confusion among the general public and giving rise to a wrong psychology in society. The ministry has mentioned that this risks weakening trust in the information system and negatively affecting social balance.

Stating that it takes the act of disseminating misleading information very seriously, the ministry has clarified that strict steps would be taken to control such activities, while cautioning  all media outlets, information providers and individuals not to publish or broadcast news and information that has not been confirmed by official bodies. The ministry has warned that if baseless, false and misleading news is found to be published or broadcast, the person or organization publishing such content will be identified and strict action will be taken in accordance with the prevailing law.

Similarly, the ministry has also urged the general public not to engage in any activity that may help spread misleading information. Social media users have also been requested to check the authenticity and veracity of any content before sharing it through their personal accounts.

The CIT ministry has requested that if there is any information or complaint about such misleading information or news, the details should be provided through the Social Media Complaints Registration portal on the ministry’s official website. If necessary, one can also contact the Ministry by phone or email.
