Supreme Court upholds Thapa-led Congress team, rejects Deuba petition

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) has dismissed a petition filed by Sher Bahadur Deuba and Purna Bahadur Khadka, upholding the decision of the Election Commission of Nepal to recognize the leadership of Gagan Thapa.

A joint bench of Justices Sharanga Subedi and Nripadhwaj Niraula issued the verdict following hearings on Thursday and Friday, effectively settling the internal party dispute that began in January.

Deuba and Khadka had filed the writ petition seeking to annul the Election Commission’s decision endorsing the Thapa-led team elected through a special convention. Earlier, the court had declined to issue an interim order and had sought written responses from the opposition.

With the latest ruling, the leadership dispute within the Nepali Congress has now been legally resolved.
