KATHMANDU: The Federation of Nepalese National Transport Entrepreneurs has urged the government to either reduce fuel prices or increase public transport fares, citing a sharp rise in petroleum costs.
Senior Vice President Saroj Sitaula said the recent spike in fuel prices, driven by international factors, has put heavy pressure on transport operators. He called on the government to provide full customs duty exemption on fuel or introduce alternative measures to ease the burden.
“Fuel prices have surged significantly in a short period due to global issues. We have asked the government to increase the existing 50 percent customs duty waiver to 100 percent or adopt other solutions,” Sitaula said.
The government had last adjusted public transport and freight fares on April 8 as part of its routine revision. However, Sitaula said the latest increase in fuel prices has forced transport operators to demand another adjustment.
“That adjustment was part of a regular process. The current demand is due to the sharp rise in fuel prices,” he added.
The federation has warned that it may not be able to continue services if immediate measures are not taken. Issuing a statement on Thursday, it reiterated its demand for fare revision or a rollback of fuel price hikes.
It has also advised its members across the country to minimize fuel consumption and reduce operational losses during this challenging period.
“We strongly urge the government, particularly the state-owned Nepal Oil Corporation, to ensure alternative arrangements instead of repeated price hikes,” the statement read.
