House committee chair elections taking place today



KATHMANDU: Elections for the chairs of thematic committees under the House of Representatives are being held today, with nominations for 12 committees already registered.

The Federal Parliament Secretariat has published the election schedule for the committees, often referred to as a mini parliament.

According to the schedule, proposals to elect committee chairs were registered between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm on Thursday. Federal Parliament Secretariat spokesperson Ekram Giri said nominations were filed for 10 committees under the House of Representatives and two joint committees.

As per Federal Parliament (House of Representatives) Secretary Harka Raj Rai, each nomination must be proposed by one committee member and supported by another member of the same committee.

For the House of Representatives committees, Dr. Krishnahari Budhathoki has filed nomination for the Finance Committee, Sumnima Udas for the International Relations and Tourism Committee, and Rahbar Ansari for the Industry, Commerce, Labour and Consumer Welfare Committee.

Similarly, Samikshya Baskota has been nominated for the Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee, Hari Dhakal for the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee, and Bharat Bahadur Khadka for the Public Accounts Committee.

Aakriti Awasthi has filed nomination for the Women and Social Affairs Committee, Ashish Gajurel for the Infrastructure Development Committee, and Ashok Chaudhary for the Agriculture, Cooperatives and Natural Resources Committee.

For the Education, Health and Information Technology Committee, nominations have been filed by Dr. Ojaswi Sherchan of the Rastriya Swatantra Party and Gurupraasad Baral of the CPN-UML.

Under the joint committees, Bodhanarayan Shrestha has filed nomination for the Parliamentary Hearing Committee. Likewise, Ganesh Karki of the Rastriya Swatantra Party and Madankumari Shah (Garima) of the CPN have filed nominations for the Committee on Monitoring and Evaluation of the Implementation of Directive Principles, Policies and Obligations of the State.

Today at 1:00 pm, the respective committee meetings will be held where proposers will formally present the nominations, supporters will endorse them, and the proposals will be put to a vote.

The secretariat has requested that ministers who are members of more than one committee inform the concerned committee in writing at least 24 hours before the election if a voting situation arises.

There are 10 committees under the House of Representatives, four under the National Assembly, and two joint committees.

The House committees include the Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee; Agriculture, Cooperatives and Natural Resources Committee; Infrastructure Development Committee; Women and Social Affairs Committee; State Affairs and Good Governance Committee; Education, Health and Information Technology Committee; Public Accounts Committee; Finance Committee; International Relations and Tourism Committee; and Industry, Commerce, Labour and Consumer Welfare Committee.

The joint committees include the Parliamentary Hearing Committee and the Committee on Monitoring and Evaluation of Directive Principles, Policies and Responsibilities of the State.

According to spokesperson Giri, proposals regarding the nominations will be presented for decision in the respective committee meetings scheduled for Friday at 1:00 pm.
