Education Minister and British Ambassador  discuss educational reforms and Autism schools

KATHMANDU: Minister for Education, Science, and Technology, Sasmit Pokharel, who also serves as the government spokesperson, held a courtesy meeting with the British Ambassador to Nepal, Rob Fenn, at the Ministry in Singha Durbar on Wednesday.

The discussions focused on deepening the historical bilateral relationship between Nepal and the United Kingdom, with a specific emphasis on collaboration in the education and sports sectors.

During the meeting, Minister Pokharel and Ambassador Fenn consulted on potential British support for the Nepal government’s recent initiative to establish Autism-based Model Schools in all seven provinces. This project, officially announced on World Autism Awareness Day (April 2), aims to provide specialized education and care for neurodivergent students. Minister Pokharel expressed his expectation for British assistance in developing the necessary resources and skilled manpower required to make these residential schools effective.

The two officials also deliberated on the professional capacity building of teachers across Nepal. Minister Pokharel highlighted that the government is seeking continuous support from the UK to modernize teacher training programs. Additionally, the conversation touched upon the prospects of transnational education in Nepal, exploring ways to enhance the competitiveness and results-oriented nature of the country’s academic system through international partnerships.

Ambassador Fenn reiterated the UK government’s eagerness to continue its long-standing cooperation with Nepal.

He noted that the UK admires the country’s democratic progress and is keen to support the momentum of the current administration’s reform agenda. The meeting concluded with a mutual understanding to further strengthen the multifaceted relationship between the two nations, ensuring that the education sector remains a cornerstone of their bilateral partnership.
