NC General Secretaries clarify membership drive; dismiss rumors of cancellation

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress General Secretaries Pradip Paudel and Gururaj Ghimire have clarified that the party’s ongoing initiative is aimed at organizing and updating active memberships rather than canceling them.

Sharing their views via social media on Monday, the dual General Secretaries addressed what they termed as false and misleading rumors suggesting a mass cancellation of memberships. They emphasized that the update process is designed to make the membership system more robust, transparent, and effective by utilizing technology and procedural reforms learned from past experiences.

According to the leaders, this renewal process is essential for strengthening the party organization at the grassroots level and fostering internal discipline, accountability, and unity.

This clarification serves as a direct counter-response to a recent strongly worded statement from former Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka. Khadka had previously labeled any new membership renewal or cancellation efforts as illegal and biased, arguing that the process had already been completed within the official timetable for the 15th General Convention, scheduled for May 11–14, 2026.

Paudel and Ghimire, however, urged all active members to update their records on time and encouraged new members to join the party. They maintained that the drive is a vital component of organizational strengthening and does not undermine the existing schedule for the upcoming convention.

This public exchange highlights the continuing friction within the party leadership as different factions struggle for control over the membership base ahead of the national gathering in Kathmandu.
