Purna Bahadur Khadka rejects membership cancellation; insists on scheduled 15th General Convention

KATHMANDU: Former Acting President of the Nepali Congress, Purna Bahadur Khadka, has issued a strongly worded statement amid intensifying internal disputes, asserting that active membership cannot be revoked through the whims or speeches of individual leaders.

In a press release issued from the B.P. Smriti Bhawan in Lalitpur, Khadka stressed that party memberships acquired during the risky Panchayat era are deeply tied to historical struggle, democracy, and the honor of martyrs.

He argued that treating such memberships lightly undermines the party’s foundation. Khadka specifically objected to attempts by a rival faction to organize a unilateral special general convention and legitimize a newly formed committee while the dispute over the party’s official status remains sub-judice in the Supreme Court. He termed such moves as violations of the party statute, the national constitution, and prevailing laws.

Addressing the upcoming 15th General Convention scheduled for May 11–14, 2026, in Kathmandu, Khadka stated that the distribution and renewal of memberships have already been completed according to the established timetable. He described any new demands to cancel or restart the membership process as illegal and biased.

Khadka clarified that the focus should remain on providing opportunities to members who may have been missed rather than questioning existing ones. He urged all factions to cease activities that invite division at a time when party unity is critical.
