Health Minister Mehta says Constitution guarantees free basic healthcare to all citizens

KATHMANDU: Minister for Health and Population Nisha Mehta has said that the Constitution of Nepal guarantees health as a fundamental right, ensuring every citizen access to free basic healthcare services.

Speaking at a program held on the occasion of World Health Day, Minister Mehta said that not only healthcare services but also constitutional rights such as a clean environment, food security, and consumer rights are directly linked to citizens’ overall health.

“Rights related to a clean environment, food security, and consumer protection—whether directly or indirectly connected to health—are equally important. Effective implementation of these fundamental rights is our priority in building a healthy Nepal,” she said.

Referring to this year’s World Health Day slogan, ‘Human, animal and environmental well-being through science and One Health, our victory,’ she emphasized the interconnection between different aspects of health.

Minister Mehta also stressed the need for coordination and collaboration among government and concerned stakeholders to address emerging health challenges.

“Collaboration among all stakeholders is essential to tackle new health challenges. Recognizing the importance of the One Health concept, the government had already endorsed the National One Health Policy in 2019,” she said.

She also expressed commitment to further strengthening coordination and cooperation, particularly for the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases in the coming days.
