Dog and cat sterilization campaign launched to control rabies

CHITWAN: Kalika Municipality in Chitwan has carried out a sterilization and vaccination campaign targeting community dogs and cats to help control the spread of rabies.

The municipality launched the initiative citing a high risk of disease transmission, as community animals often come into contact with wildlife.

Municipal veterinarian Dr. Raju Prasad Neupane said the program was implemented in line with the Government of Nepal’s goal of controlling rabies. Under the campaign, teams visited all wards to collect dogs and cats, which were then sterilized and vaccinated against rabies.

From March 26 6o 28, a total of 272 dogs and two cats were sterilized. “The program was conducted last year as well, and this year’s campaign aims to continue and strengthen efforts to manage community dog and cat populations,” Dr. Neupane said.

The government has set a target of reducing human deaths from rabies caused by dogs and cats to zero by 2030. In line with this goal, the campaign has been implemented under the ‘Animal Birth Control’ program. Around 150 animals were sterilized during last year’s campaign.

Dr. Neupane added that post-surgery health checks were conducted and necessary treatment was provided to the animals.
