KATHMANDU: Former Minister Deepak Khadka and Nepali Congress leader has been taken into custody. Police have confirmed his arrest.
The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of the police took him into custody on Sunday morning from Budhanilkantha, police sources said.
The arrest follows a request from the Money Laundering Investigation Department, which had sent a letter to Police Headquarters to investigate Khadka. He has been taken into custody for questioning based on that request.
CIB spokesperson Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shiva Kumar Shrestha stated that Khadka has been taken into custody for investigation in a money laundering case.
Khadka has been involved in controversies on multiple fronts over the years. He was long criticized over the Nepal Scout land issue, and during his tenure as Energy Minister, he faced scrutiny for removing Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Executive Chief Kulman Ghising, who was widely regarded as efficient.
More recently, Khadka drew public ire during the Gen-Z movement on September 9, 2025, when money allegedly kept in his Budhanilkantha residence was burned by protesters. Demonstrators expressed anger over his alleged possession of illegal funds.
Additionally, Khadka is accused of illegally occupying land and buildings belonging to Nepal Scouts in Lainchaur. The CIB claims that his company, Khadka Land Development Pvt. Ltd., has been using approximately 12 ropanis of Scout land without permission for years.
Scouts filed a complaint alleging that Khadka refused to vacate the land despite agreements and had not paid crores of rupees in rent.
