KATHMANDU: A meeting of the Nepali Congress Central Working Committee is underway at the party’s central office in Sanepa, with the 15th general convention as the main agenda.
Discussions are focused on convening the party’s 15th general convention, with preparations reportedly underway to inaugurate it on September 9, coinciding with the birth anniversary of party founder BP Koirala.
Addressing the meeting, party president Gagan Kumar Thapa clarified his recent resignation, stating that the decision was voluntary and not made under any pressure. He said he had intended to resign immediately after the elections but delayed the move due to technical reasons, adding that he had finalized the decision on March 17.
“I am the president of Nepali Congress, the captain of the team. The party contested the elections under my leadership, so I must be accountable,” Thapa said.
He added that he felt accountable not only to himself but also to vice presidents, general secretaries, and party members, noting that he had received immense support and trust from party cadres.
Thapa’s resignation, submitted last Wednesday, was rejected by the Central Working Committee meeting held on Sunday. He is currently participating in Tuesday’s meeting and addressing leaders.
He also said there was no need to dwell on debates over who is right or wrong, adding that the general convention would deliver the final verdict. “Now, discussions and decisions will be made through the general convention,” he said.
Thapa informed that he would present proposals regarding the timing and process of the general convention during the meeting.
