Election a triumph for people and constitution: PM Karki

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister (PM) Sushila Karki has said that the peaceful completion of the elections is a victory for the Nepali people, the constitution, and the nation.

Speaking at a program organized at Singha Durbar on Sunday to mark International Women’s Day, Prime Minister Karki described the successful conduct of the House of Representatives election under special circumstances as a major achievement. “This is a victory for the Nepali people, the constitution, and the nation,” she emphasized.

She highlighted that the elections resulted in a peaceful, democratic, and constitutional outcome, and expressed gratitude to all those who contributed to ensuring the process was smooth and credible.

“In a democracy, a ballot is not just a piece of paper; it is a symbol of a citizen’s self-respect,” Prime Minister Karki said. She further noted that elected representatives should remember that a mandate once received is not permanent. While legally valid for five years, its moral legitimacy must be continuously reaffirmed by the people’s trust.

Prime Minister Karki also reflected on women’s rights, stating that the constitution guarantees them as fundamental rights, and noting that women’s participation in state institutions has grown significantly over recent decades.

However, she stressed that women still face discrimination, unequal opportunities, gender-based violence, and cultural inequality, and urged them to continue striving with determination to secure their rights.
