Lawmakers raise concerns over Nepali workers’ safety abroad, development budget, inflation, and election security

KATHMANDU: Members of the National Assembly on Monday drew the government’s attention to multiple pressing issues, including the safety of Nepali workers abroad, stalled development budgets, inflation, and security ahead of the upcoming elections.

Speaking during the zero-hour session, lawmaker Gomadevi Timilsina urged the government to expedite the repatriation of bodies of Nepalis killed in the coal mine explosion in Meghalaya, India, and intensify the search for missing workers.

Lawmaker Jayanti Devi Rai highlighted the condition of those injured during the Gen-Z movement, expressing concern for their health and calling for prompt medical attention. Similarly, Durga Kumari Gurung pointed out delays in development projects and urged the government not to halt the allocation of development budgets.

Ahead of the elections, Narbahadur Bisht and Suresh Kumar Ale Magar stressed the need for all political parties to ensure a free, fair, and fraud-free electoral process. Bisht specifically raised concerns about potential conflicts and clashes in Jhapa district and called on the government to remain vigilant. Lawmaker Yubaraj Sharma said constitutionalist forces must take a firm stance to uphold electoral fairness.

Addressing inflation, Bhuwan Bahadur Sunar urged immediate steps to control the prices of essential commodities such as gas, petroleum products, and food items. Lawmaker Madankumari Shah (Garima) highlighted growing road safety concerns in Sudurpaschim and called for urgent improvements to protect travelers.

Meanwhile, Rajendra Laxmi Gaire raised alarms over the National Health Insurance Program, noting it is in serious crisis. She urged the government to act promptly and avoid setting standards that could discourage both staff and service beneficiaries.
