26 days to polls: 24 candidates submit clarifications to EC

KATHMANDU: As many as 24 candidates have so far submitted explanations to the Election Commission (EC) after being asked to clarify alleged violations of the election code of conduct.

The EC had sought clarifications from 34 candidates representing various political parties as well as independent candidates. EC Spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai said that responses have been received from 24 of them so far.

According to the Commission, investigations and action processes have been initiated based on complaints received, with the aim of ensuring effective implementation of the election code of conduct and minimizing violations.

For this purpose, the Central Code of Conduct Monitoring Committee, District Code of Conduct Monitoring Committees, District Monitoring Officers, and concerned election offices are actively engaged in monitoring activities. To strengthen monitoring at the district level, Assistant Chief District Officers in all 77 districts have been assigned responsibility for overseeing compliance.

Similarly, Chief Treasury Controllers and Treasury Controllers in the districts have been designated as Code of Conduct Monitoring Officers to supervise financial matters related to the elections.

The EC stated that awareness campaigns on the code of conduct and efforts to secure commitments to its observance from relevant stakeholders are being carried out effectively within a short time frame. Necessary actions have also been taken at the district level on complaints related to code of conduct violations, the Commission added.
