HoR polls: Women outnumber men on PR closed lists

KATHMANDU:  Political parties have submitted closed lists for the proportional representation (PR) system in the upcoming House of Representatives (HoR) elections, with women candidates outnumbering men.

According to details released by the Election Commission, a total of 3,135 candidates have been included in the final PR closed lists, of whom 1,772 are women and 1,363 are men. The lists represent candidates from 63 political parties.

The Commission published the final lists on Tuesday in accordance with Section 29 of the House of Representatives Election Act, 2074 BS, and Rule 16(2) of the corresponding Election Regulations.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission removed the names of 76 candidates from the original closed lists after determining that they were ineligible for various reasons. These include 21 candidates blacklisted by the Credit Information Center, 25 individuals who were also listed under the Provincial Assembly proportional electoral system, and 10 candidates who had failed to pay the prescribed fines.

In addition, one candidate was removed for not being registered as a voter from a backward region despite being listed under that category, while another 10 names were withdrawn at the request of the respective political parties.
