Cardamom exports from Mechi Customs surge to Rs 7.19 billion in six months



JHAPA: Exports of cardamom, chhurpi (dried cheese), and other goods through the eastern border post at Kakadbhitta have surged in the first half of the current fiscal year 2025/26.

According to the Mechi Customs Office, 3.461 million kg of cardamom worth Rs 7.199 billion was exported between mid-July and mid-January.

Information Officer Ishwar Kumar Humagain stated that cardamom exports have risen by 58 percent compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year, when 2.955 million kg worth Rs 4.557 billion was exported.

The export of chhurpi, used as dog and cat food in third countries, has also grown significantly, increasing by 66.2 percent compared to last year.

Exports of veneer sheets and musuro dal have also seen significant growth. Veneer sheet exports increased by 109 percent to Rs 530.5 million, while musuro dal exports jumped 481 percent to Rs 90.1 million.

Conversely, tea and plywood exports have declined compared to the previous fiscal year. Tea exports dropped 26.4 percent to Rs 2.178 billion, and plywood exports fell 44.5 percent to Rs 1.974 billion.

Customs Officer Humagain further reported that in the first half of 2082/83, exports of amlicho reached Rs 33.893 billion, ginger and dried fruits Rs 50.173 billion, cauliflower, cabbage, and broccoli Rs 11.319 billion, and herbs Rs 5.742 billion.

The Mechi Customs Office continues to monitor and record trade trends at the eastern border, highlighting the growing contribution of agricultural and specialty products to Nepal’s export economy.
