NC convention delegates demand immediate election schedule amid sloganeering

KATHMANDU: Delegates at the Nepali Congress (NC) special general convention in Bhrikuti Mandap have begun chanting slogans demanding the immediate announcement of an election schedule, accusing the party leadership of deliberately delaying and confusing the process.

As talks between the establishment faction and the special convention group failed to reach a breakthrough, convention delegates intensified their protests, saying they would not accept any further postponement and that the party must move straight to electing a new leadership through a formal voting process.

The special general convention, originally scheduled for two days on January 11 and 12, has already been extended. On Tuesday morning, party president Sher Bahadur Deuba, Dr. Shekhar Koirala and leaders representing the special convention faction held talks in an effort to find a compromise, but the negotiations collapsed without an agreement.

Following news of the failed talks, delegates inside the convention hall demanded that the election process be launched immediately, warning that any further delay would undermine the credibility of the convention.

On Monday, the convention had already endorsed the procedural framework and the political proposal, which requires the dissolution of the existing central committee and the election of a new one. However, the start of negotiations stalled that process, prompting delegates to step up pressure on the leadership to move ahead with voting.
